Privacy policy

What we collect, why, who handles it for us, and how to have it corrected or removed.

Who we are

LegalLocalGuide (“we”) publishes general legal information and a directory of law firms and attorneys in the United States. We are not a law firm and do not provide legal representation. This policy covers legallocalguide.com and the emails we send. Contact: support@legallocalguide.com.

Information about law firms and attorneys

The directory describes firms and attorneys using information that is publicly available: firm websites, state bar records, business registrations and similar sources. It is business information — names, offices, practice areas, bar numbers, phone numbers and websites. A firm or attorney may claim their profile to correct it, and may ask us at any time to correct or remove a listing by writing to the address above.

Information you give us

Accounts. To claim or manage a profile you create an account with an email address, a name and a password. We store the password only as a one-way hash. We keep a log of account and profile changes (what changed, when, and the IP address it came from) so that a claim or an edit can be checked afterwards; that log is kept for as long as the account and the profile exist.

Claims. Verifying that you are entitled to manage a firm's profile may involve a work email address on the firm's domain or documents you choose to send. We use them only to decide the claim.

Enhanced subscriptions. Payment is handled by Stripe. We never see or store card numbers; we store Stripe's identifiers for your customer record and subscription, its status, and the dates involved. Stripe's own privacy policy governs the payment itself.

Photos and logos. Images a firm uploads to an Enhanced profile are stored with metadata removed (including any location data in the file) and are shown publicly on the profile while Enhanced is active. They are kept for 12 months after Enhanced ends, then deleted; a firm can delete them at any time.

Contact forms. Where a firm's profile offers a contact form, what you submit — your name, how to reach you and your message — is delivered to that firm and stored so the firm can read it in its dashboard. We tell you this, and how the firm may use it, on the form itself before you send it. We do not sell, distribute or resell inquiries, and no firm other than the one you wrote to receives them.

Information collected automatically

Profile views. When a firm's or attorney's profile is viewed we record the page, the time, and the kind of place the visit came from (a search engine, another site, or a direct visit). No identifier of the viewer is attached — not an IP address, a cookie, or an account — so views cannot be linked to a person, and the firm sees only totals. Visits from automated crawlers are dropped, and a firm's own visits to its profile are excluded from its counts. Appearances in search results are counted only as totals.

Searches. Searches by practice area and location are recorded as counts with the terms used, with no identifier of who searched.

Describe your situation. When you describe a legal situation in your own words, the text you enter is sent to an AI service (Anthropic) to work out which area of law it falls under, and is stored by us together with that classification so we can improve matching. It is not linked to an account, IP address or cookie. Do not include names, case numbers or other details that identify people; the box is for describing the kind of problem, not the file.

Hosting logs. Our hosting provider records each request (path, time, IP address, browser) to keep the site running. Those logs are held by the provider for a short period — days, not months.

Error reports. When something breaks, an error report goes to our error reporting service. Reports are scrubbed before they are sent: they do not include IP addresses, the contents of forms, or session recordings. The service keeps them for 90 days.

Cookies. We set cookies only to keep you signed in. We use no advertising cookies and no third-party analytics scripts.

Who handles data for us

These providers process data on our behalf, under their own security and privacy terms:

  • Vercel — hosting and delivery of the site.
  • Neon — the database.
  • Cloudflare R2 — storage of uploaded images.
  • Stripe — payments, subscriptions and the billing portal.
  • Resend — delivery of the emails we send you.
  • Sentry — error reporting.
  • Anthropic — classifying the text of “describe your situation” searches.

We do not sell personal information and we do not share it with anyone else except as required by law or to protect the site and the people who use it.

Email

We send transactional email only: account verification, password resets and security alerts, claim decisions, notice of a contact-form inquiry, and billing notices. Every message says what it is and has a reply address that reaches a person. We do not send marketing email.

Your choices and rights

You can see and change your account details in your dashboard, and delete images you uploaded. To correct or delete anything else, including a directory listing or your account, write to support@legallocalguide.com and we respond within 30 days. Where a law such as the California Consumer Privacy Act gives you rights to access, correct or delete personal information, or to know how it is used, those rights are exercised the same way; we do not sell or share personal information for advertising, so there is nothing to opt out of.

Children

The site is for adults. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18.

Changes

When this policy changes materially we update the date at the top and, for account holders, say so by email. The terms of service and the cancellation and refund policy are separate documents.
